Life Threatening Illnesses

One thing I really don’t get is how people turn their noses up when someone is trying to hand them a promotional item. I was just walking through the Skywalk and came across this guy who was handing out a piece of paper that was similar in size to a bookmark. The paper promoted an event this Saturday at the Hoyt Sherman Place. Obviously this guy has passion about this event, or he wouldn't have decided to stand in the Skywalk to ensure everyone is the wiser. Yet, everyone who walked by him either gave him a glare and continued on their jaunt throughout the enclosed walkway or lied straight to his face about their attempt to come and see the event this weekend. It was as if he had the Bubonic Plague and he was looking to spread his disease with everyone, yet all he wanted to do was merely hand out a piece of paper promoting a passion of his.

Why is it people react that way? Aren't Iowans suppost to be nice and hospitable?

For the record, the event he so passionately promoting is the Dracula: A Comedy Noir, which is featured at Hoyt Sherman this Saturday at 3 and 7:30 pm. The Comedy Noir is sold as The Ballet that Really Bites! Unfortunately, there is no other information on the event on the Hoyt Sherman website, but I guess that adds to the intrigue. I Googled the event name to find out that it is presented by the Iowa Dance Theatre and it’s their 10th year of presenting this specific event. Iowa Dance Theatre’s description: "Dracula, A Comedy Noir is a dark comedy ballet of romance and intrigue." The show must be a good if it has been playing for 10 straight years. Toss in the fact this guy has gone out of his way to help promote the play to all those fearful of contacting a life-threatening illness, and it must mean it’s fantastic.

Thanks to Adam Whitney for the photo of Hoyt Sherman.

I think I know why people avoid people handing out things in the skywalk, because most of the time it's either religious literature or requests for money. In fact, I had to pass by one this morning on the way to my car. At least once a week someone tries to give me the "Watch Tower" publication. Personally, I would prefer not to have to be solicited every week, but tis the season for that.
