Proving Des Moines is NOT boring

Fall Favorites: Food

There are so many great things about fall, but one of my absolute favorites is the food. And drinks. There’s nothing better than that first cool morning and the perfect pumpkin spice latte to get the day going. Or a hot apple cider accompanying an evening at a bonfire. There is something comforting about fall foods and drinks that warm the heart and the home. The smell of pumpkin baking or the crock pot warming the night’s dinner brings happiness on a cool day like we’ve had in Des Moines this past week.

Apple bars!

Apple bars!

To me, the signature dishes of fall include pumpkin or apple. I have made everything from apple pie to cake to brownies to crisp, and I can’t get enough. It helps that my husband’s favorite fruit is the apple. I made these bars last week to his rave reviews. I would have to say I prefer pumpkin to apple. I love everything from pumpkin pie to bread to bars. And of course, the lattes.

This week when the cooler temps started to set in, I began to crave comfort foods to keep me warm. I’ve tried many chili recipes and still haven’t found one I really love yet. Maybe this year will be the year. I have discovered an excellent baked potato soup recipe that has won rave reviews for everyone I have made it for. I do make a few tweaks to the recipe to make it my own.

And it’s about that time to bring out the crock pot. There’s nothing like a home-cooked meal waiting for you at the end of a long day, when the work has already been done for you. I love how the smell fills the whole house, especially when I make my mom’s famous roast beef, potatoes and carrots. I’ve also used it to make apple pork loin, as well as soups and chili. What are your favorite crock pot recipes?

I am getting hungry as I write this and am thinking about what I’ll put on the menu for this week. There are so many great foods to enjoy in the fall – what do you like the most? Any good recipes to share or restaurants to try to enjoy some fall fare?
