Proving Des Moines is NOT boring

Winter in Des Moines

This past week, winter hit Des Moines in full force, dumping our first major snowfall followed by subzero temperatures. It was pretty to look at but not so pretty to experience.

Thankfully, this week is looking warmer, and we can look forward to more activities and reasons to enjoy this normally not-so-enjoyable time of year. Winter in Des Moines can be a season to embrace – we just have to find and make our own fun, rather than use the cold and snow as an excuse to hibernate all winter.

snowshoeing (1)There are some great activities you can enjoy in the snow, from snowshoeing to sledding to adult snow ball softball. Yep.

Des Moines Parks and Recreation has winter activities for both adults and families – with some fun snow-themed ones geared towards the older crowd. Adult snow ball is a slow-pitch softball tournament, with both coed and men’s tournaments. Games are played at City of Des Moines league softball fields, and tournaments will be held Jan. 24-25 for coed teams and Jan. 31-Feb. 1 for men’s teams. Registration ends January 18 – find more details and register on the Parks and Recreation website.

Another unique activity to enjoy in the snow is snowshoeing. According to Parks and Recreation website, if you can walk, you can snowshoe. And for just $5 per person (which includes your snow shoe rental), you can take a guided tour of the Des Moines Sculpture Park. Jill Featherstone, Des Moines Art Center’s Director of Education, will guide stompers on this tour Feb. 6 at noon. Itching to snowshoe before then? Polk County Conservation and Des Moines Parks and Recreation offer snowshoe rental as well. Check out the link for some great tips and recommended trails.

Then, of course, you can get bundled up, grab a sled and find a great hill somewhere in the city. Whether you hit up Waveland Golf Course or Greenwood Park or are feeling adventurous enough for Sleepy Hollow, there isn’t a shortage of great sledding spots in Des Moines. This is a fun activity to do with friends or family, followed by some adult beverages or hot cocoa depending on your company.
